Make an Informed Choice

Abortion is a serious decision with risks and side effects, so it’s critical to be informed before making a decision.

Though St. Gianna Pregnancy Resource Center does not provide or refer for abortions, we’ll educate you on all your options. Getting the facts on abortion procedures will help you consider your health and well-being.

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation. This method uses drugs to end the pregnancy.

Mifepristone is taken first. This drug blocks progesterone, a hormone that supports the pregnancy as it grows and develops. Without progesterone, the pregnancy detaches from the uterine lining and ends.

After, misoprostol is taken. It induces uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy from the body.

These drugs will cause abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding as they work to end and expel the pregnancy. However, other side effects can occur, including:

  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

Taking abortion drugs is also associated with certain risks, including:

  • Digestive symptoms
  • Fever
  • Infection
  • Heavy, prolonged bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion (some pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus, requiring another procedure)

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion procedures use a combination of drugs, surgical instruments, and suctioning to end and remove the pregnancy.

Following the procedure, spotting or light bleeding and mild cramping can occur. However, this method also carries certain risks, including:

  • Uterine perforation (when a surgical instrument pokes a hole in the uterus)
  • Damage to the cervix
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall (which can cause painful periods and infertility)
  • Infection

Only you can make a pregnancy decision, so if you’re thinking about abortion, it’s critical to consider the risks and side effects. We’ll help you weigh all your options, answer your questions, and more.
