If you’ve taken mifepristone, the first drug in the abortion pill regimen, and regret your decision, there is hope. A protocol called Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) can offer you the chance to continue your pregnancy.

St. Gianna Pregnancy Resource Center provides no-cost APR referrals and information. We’re here to help.

How Does APR Work?

To first understand APR, it’s critical to learn about medical abortion. This procedure (also called the abortion pill) uses a series of drugs to end the pregnancy.

Mifepristone is taken first, which blocks a hormone called progesterone. Progesterone is needed for the pregnancy to grow and develop, so without it, the pregnancy will detach from the uterine lining and end.

Next, misoprostol will cause the uterus to contract. These contractions expel the pregnancy out of the body. If this drug is taken, APR cannot be administered.

Abortion pill reversal works by administering doses of progesterone to attempt to outnumber and outcompete the effects of mifepristone. These doses can be administered orally, vaginally, or by injection.

If you decide to try APR, you will be closely monitored by the provider to determine whether your pregnancy continues.

Is APR Successful?

One study found that APR was successful in 64-68% of cases, and it was not shown to cause birth defects or have other negative effects. Additionally, progesterone has been used to aid women in continuing their pregnancies for over 50 years, making it a practical option.

However, it’s important to remember that timing is everything. APR is most effective if begun within 24-72 hours after taking mifepristone.

If you’ve taken mifepristone and have second thoughts, we’re here to support you and help you find the necessary resources.
